SAIL
Activities and Events
Activities
and events are what SAIL is all about! Our membership is our community.
Members work together to create field trips, special interest clubs,
and other educational or entertaining activities. Here is a sampling
of some of the activites SAIL members currently enjoy.
Park
Days
Meet other SAIL Members for playtime at a different park every week.
It's a great way to get to know other members and their kids. It's also
ideal for burning off some of that extra energy before returning to
other homeschool activities. Our Monthly Gathering (on the 2nd Tuesday
of each month) is open to homeschooling visitors who would like to join
or learn more about SAIL.
Field
Trips
All SAIL field trips are member-organized. Field trips that we have
enjoyed in the past include trips to zoos and animal care centers, amusement
parks, local businesses and factories, Collin County Adventure Camp,
museums, and more.
Astronomy
Club
Join
with other stargazers to learn more about the sky, stars and planets.
Activities include presentations by members, experiments and using telescopes
to find objects in the sky. Our Astronomy Club is for SAIL members ages
10 and up.
Boys'
Activities
Boys
who are 5 and older gather monthly to participate in activities such
as rock climbing, ropes courses, scavenger hunts, laser tag, skateboarding,
and more.
Girls'
Activities
Girls
who are 6 and older gather monthly to participate in activities such
as bowling, crafts, drama improv, poetry jam, swimming, service projects
and games and to enjoy chatting with other girls.
Needlework
Group
Boys
and girls of all ages are welcome to our monthly Needlework Group. Bring
any type of needlework craft including (but not limited to) knitting,
crocheting, cross stitch, hand sewing, latch hook, and more. Everyone
is working on their own projects so bring something along to work on
while you talk and hang out with others.
Robotics
and Engineering Team
SAIL
teens form a Robotics and Engineering team and participate in the CoCo
BEST Robotics competition in the fall. Parents act as mentors to teach
skills such as carpentry, metal work, and electronics. Past teams have
performed very well at local and regional competitions. Projects include
robot design, fabrication, programming and manipulation as well as marketing,
presentations, public relations, spirit, teambuilding, and outreach
programs.
Five
in a Row Book Circle
Our
younger members (and their parents) participate
in field trips and activites using Five in a Row books as a learning
tool. Enrollment for new participants is in the fall. Space is limited.
Playdates
and Hangouts
Playdates
and hangouts are usually geared towards a particular age group (such
as early elementary or teens) or special interest (such as Legos or
Pokemon). Some are scheduled on a monthly basis; others are scheduled
periodically.
Book
Clubs
Book
clubs give members a chance to expand their reading with books they
might not normally read and to discuss their impressions with others
who have also read them. Book clubs are organized by age.
Movies
SAIL
kids meet regularly at members' homes to watch both recent and classic
movies. Movie events are organized by age.
Parent
Activities
We
think it is very important for SAIL parents to have some activities
that are all their own. Some parents-only activies include our weekly
Mom's Night Out, monthly Mom's Book Club, quarterly Curriculum Night,
and occasional Dad's Night Out and Parents' Night Out.
Cultural
Events
Cultural
events are planned for all ages and include museum visits, plays, puppet
shows, musical performances, presentations on world cultures and more.
Family
Gatherings
Families
gather regularly for potlucks, holiday events and other special occasions.
Parties
SAIL
members love a good party! Past parties have included Not-Back-to-School,
holiday, and seasonal parties.
Co-op
The
SAIL Co-op involves homeschooling families working together to create
a day of enrichment classes for their kids. All participants are actively
involved in making Co-op a success by serving as teachers and class
helpers. Click here for more information about
the SAIL Co-op.
Other
SAIL
members have also coordinated these activities in the past. They may
be planned again in the future!
